Review: Hotel Ritter St. Georg (Brunswick)

2007-06-26

Louise, Sophia and I spent the night between June 16 and 17, 2007 at the Hotel Ritter St. Georg in Brunswick. The hotel is almost an attraction in itself, the building being from the 15th century.

We arrived at the hotel, on the outskirts of the absolute center of Brunswick, at around 8 in the evening on Saturday, and were warmly welcomed by the young girl in the reception. The hotel is rather small, having only about 20 rooms in all, so the reception is not staffed 24 hrs a day. We had called them in advance, however, to made sure there were someone there to greet os, and that was no problem.

There are no lifts in the old building, so we climbed the beautiful old stairs and quickly found our room on the second floor, with a view to Alte Knochenhauerstraße.

We had informed the hotel that we were travelling with a 7 months old child, and the standard agreement was that she would sleep in her parents (ours) bed. However, when we arrived at our comfortable room, they had already installed a nice Winnie the Pooh travelling bed for Sophia. That's good service.

The room was bigger than we had expected. A large bedroom, a small connecting hall, TV-room with a minibar and a sofa, and a large bathroom. Everything, except the bathroom, was kept in an old-fashioned style.

At first, we thought we had found a nice and quiet place, without noise from the street - unfortunately, as it later turned out, the hotel lies very close to one of Brunswick's most trendy night clubs, so there was a certain amount of singing in the street when people were going home early in the morning. Closing the windows towards the street solved the problem, however, and outside of the weekends there's probably no problem anyway.

We had our breakfast in the Hotel's nice breakfast room on the first floor, on the corner of Alte Knochenhauerstraße and Petersilienstraße. The selection was decent without being in any way amazing, but it was quite what could be expected from a 3 star hotel.

At around 10:30 we checked out, packed the car, and walked around Brunswick for a few hours before we went on to Wolfenbüttel and Goslar. The hotel is about 3 minutes walk from the center, and is a great base for exploring the city.

We had booked the hotel via HRS and it cost us €85 in all, including breakfast. A reasonable price for the good service, the nice room, the cozy surroundings and the great location. The hotel can be visited online here
