Two days at the hospital!

2006-12-06

These last few days have been somewhat chaotic and hard on the new parents, but fortunately all looks good now

We went to Gentofte Hospital with Sophia on Sunday afternoon, as we found that her respiration rate was still very quick. The doctor agreed, but told us that she thought it would correct itself. Then she listened to her heart, however, and thought that that was quite fast as well, so she suggested that we went directly to the children's unit for further tests - just in case.

We got a room entirely to ourselves, with a bed for mother and child, and a dream bed for me. Initially we were told that we should stay there overnight while they observed Sophia's respiration and oxygene levels. The latter was fine, whereas the respiration rate continued to be much to high. On Monday morning she had taken a few blood samples, and they told us they wanted some X-rays as well. Unfortunately there was a queue for the X-rays, so they didn't take them until 8 in the evening. As the doctors wanted to look at them at their morning conference next day, we stayed on for another night.

On Tuesday morning we got some chocking news. The X-rays suggested that Sophia's heart might be too big. We were stunned. Anyway, we went directly to the children's heart unit at Rigshospitalet, and in almost no time she got her little heart scanned thoroughly and, imagine our joy when we were told there was absolutely nothing seriously wrong with it. The doctor found only two minor defects, both pretty common in newly-borns, and both of a sort that usualy goes away by themselves.

Back to Gentofte, conversation with a doctor, and an appointment to go back there for another check-up on Friday. All numbers, apart from the resp. rate where fine, so it might just improve automatically after all.
